Not many people are familiar with the little-known quarterback from South Central Louisiana State University. They lead at his team, the Mud Dogs, to a bowl game and was the MVP of the Bourbon Bowl against hated Their Rivals, the University of Louisiana Cougars. The Jacksonville Jaguars picked up Luke McGowen last season before the regular season started.
McGowen ended the night at his matchmaking Mud Dogs proud by finishing 11/15 with 244 yards passing with three touchdowns, all of wakes were Greater Than 30 yards, two Greater Than 50
Kidding and broadcasting failures aside, it was a very good night for back-up Luke McCown, and they Might not have planted a seed in Jack Del Rio's brain. David Garrard's performance against the Eagles was pitiful. Yes, Garrard was without starters Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton at tackles, but their They were the reason for Not at his poor performance. Even before the game I tweeted I was willing To Give David Garrard a pseudo-pass is at his performance Because I Expected to Be him under duress consistent with back-up book-end tackles, vain That wasn't the case. His Protection days to do was much Actually Better Than Expected.
In the first drive, the Jaguars first unit ended in a quick-three-three and out on Consecutive passes capped off by a short pass Thurs tight end Marc Lewis, even well short of the first down marker. The next drive by the Jaguars starters ended just as fast on a 3rd down pass Thurs Mike Sims-Walker that was punched away by corner back Asante Samuel, Ken made a very nice Defensive play. By the time the Jacksonville Jaguars Offense first team got the ball back again, the Philadelphia Eagles had jo began Filling in with Their second unit. The Jaguars picked up Their first first down on a nice 16 yard pass in the middle of the field Thurs Mike Thomas, vain the Jaguars once again went nowhere on the drive, ending on a failed fourth-down pass Attempt. This failed on fourth down though, Came with conséquence. Mike Sims-Walker leapt and stretched out for a David Garrard pass Thurs seemed they pull in, but their proposal was crushed Between Two Eagle Defenders "when back-up safety Kurt Coleman hit Sims-Walker and the ball Came loose. That wasn't the bad news however, as Mike Sims-Walker sustained a shoulder injury and was tion with at his arm in a sling on the side line and on the game.
All Indications so far thankfully, well that was the injury IS NOT Serious.
I'm not going to be David Garrard pile too much on the first pre-season game, it was vain Not pretty. It was pretty Not Especially considering how Luke McGowen McCowen McCown was Able to Come in and effortlessly move the Offense up and down the football field against some of the murky back-ups David Garrard That Could not. As I mentioned, at his Garrard was without two starting tackles Offensive, But That Did not really effect anything Shem Thurs. He wasn't: Speeding under duress, but their seemed quick Thurs dump the ball off Thurs at his running backs and tight ends while McCown Came in the game Blazing guns and hitting is a 73-yard touchdown bomb Thurs Troy Williamson is a first pass at his Attempt.
I've jo tion some people compliment McCown is at his performance, but their note That David Garrard isn't in danger of hi at his job. While I Realize it is only the first pre-season game and me can not make too much out of it ... But my question is this: Why shouldn't David Garrard be in danger of at his job, Especially if this Continues?
As our own Adam Stites Pointed out on twitter though,
1st game of the preseason in 2009: D. Garrard April-July 1922 yards, 0 TD. 1st preseason game of 2010: D. Garrard May to October, 1935 yards, 0 TD # perspective
Apart from the surprising disparity in performance quarterback, my MVP of the game had to Be Defensive Tackle Terrance Knighton. For all of the hooplah that was made about at his weight During training camp, it Shem Thurs Did not effect him one bit. He was a constant force in disrupting the pocket. While the Jaguars were without literally half of Their starting Defensive line, I think at times They were Able to get good pressure and move around Kevin Kolb in the pocket.
