After months of prayers and vigils, 33 Chilean miners are closer to freedom. The men have been trapped a half a mile underground since August 5th. Since then, families have reportedly been stationed outside the mine. They call it Camp Hope, loved ones living in tents and motor homes until they are reunited. The latest news of the Chilean miner’s is trending high on the Internet, as rescue crews make another breakthrough, coming one step closer to getting the miners out.
The Daily Mail reports, “Engineers were seen celebrating at the news on Saturday that the escape shaft had reached the point where the miners have been stuck for over two months. The miners reportedly range in age from 19 to 63. They were working in the Minera San Esteban, a San José gold deposit, when a large landslide blocked the entrance. Tons of rock collapsed, trapping the miners inside the mine. Mining minister Laurence Golborne warned though it could take between three and eight days before attempts start to remove the men from the San Jose mine.”
This week the miners received good news after one of the drills was able to reach the miners sooner than expected. The AP reports, "While "Plan A" and "Plan C" stalled after repeatedly veering off course, officials said Friday that the "Plan B" drill was nearing the miners at a point 2,047 feet (624 meters) below the surface."
At first the men reportedly had been living off of supplies left in the mine, CNN reports, "Water and batteries were in the shelter, and the men survived off canned tuna, a jar of peaches and moxie until a drill bit pierced the stuffy dungeon's ceiling August 22. The men attached to a probe a note scrawled in bold, red letters on a ragged piece of paper. "We are fine in the shelter, the 33 of us," it said.
Once the breakthrough happens, a capsule filled with paramedics will reportedly be sent down the mine. Rescue teams will assess the health situation of each miner and reportedly, the men in the worst health condition will be taken out of the mine first.
Families have reportedly filed law suits against mine owners and plan to file a suit against the government. To see video of the Chilean miners and rescue crews click on video link.
