People used to say That every dog has ITS day, But now, it Seems That Every Dog, Reptile, disease, birthday and beverage has ITS day, too. We thought yesterday being the 10th day of the 10th month in 2010 was a big deal, But everyone's Buzzing about Oct. 11 being Columbus Day, National Coming Out Day and Canada's Thanksgiving. The Only Thing That Would not make it better is if historians discovered That Christopher Columbus (statue at right) was a gay Canadian, But seeing as they "discovered" (in quotes, Because uh, There Were Already people there), the New World, that's Not going to happen, so we'll settle for the next best thing: a rundown of all the good These Days are Bringing on Oct.. 11, 2010.
Celebrate Your Italian Heritage With (out) a Fist Pump!

If you're Italian and you enjoy the occasional hand motion That involves raising a clenched fist Above your head and waving it wildly, then today is the day-to-use IT. Human rights violations aside (That is more later), the Italian Columbus added a Further Evidence That the world wasn't flat and tipped the domino in a chain of events of What Would Eventually Become the leader of the free world: the United States of America. But if you're not a fan of The Jersey Shore and think it portrays Italian Americans in a bad light, then Might we suggest a simple high-five? There Will Be Plenty of people around the country Celebrating at the Columbus Day Parades, and we're grieving they'll serve as happy Recipients of a hand slap.

South Dakota, Happy Native American Day!

In 2010, Nu Heightz Cinema released Their second public service announcement for Reconsider Their Columbus Day campaign. The embed code is a wee bit dysfunctional, But You Can View Their message here. The group is petitioning the federal government to Create a National Holiday for Indigenous people, something That the states of South Dakota (celebrated today) and California (celebrated in September) have Already done. In February, South Dakota Gov.. Mike Rounds declared 2010 as the "Year of Unity," in Remembrance of the 20th Anniversary of the Year of Reconciliation in the state, Which Aims Thurs Bring Together all races. Today's Native American Day celebrations will honor the 63.000 Indigenous people living in South Dakota and the Turmoil They Went through once Columbus discovered the Americas.

Oh Canada! Give Thanks Today.

You will not catch the Canadian Mothers Laying the second helpings of guilt ("Such a lovely surprise! I never see you anymore ..."), along with the mashed potatoes today. While the Canadian version of Thanksgiving is a Nationally Recognized holiday, it's not as super-sized as it is Amongst Their Southern Neighbors. Families gather to Give thanks every second Monday in October, But it's not the end-all, be-all of community. Instead, "some Canadians are feeding 1.200 people, the WHO Their homes lost in a fire recently, in downtown Toronto. There's One Way to Give Thanks, eh?

Coming Out Of The Closet Since 1987.

Certainly last but not least is the Human Rights Campaign's (HRC) National Coming Out Day. At Tonic, we've Been Sounding the alarm against Recent gay bashing that's led Thurs Suicides, and today marks Another Opportunity for YOU TO stand up for tolerance. In 1987, about 500.000 people rallied in Washington DC, for gay rights. Fast forward two Decades later, and the invention of Facebook has Brought Their Message To millions of supporters. Why is this important in 2010? Last year, 2.64 Million Facebook newsfeed stories were created. That MEANS PeopleSoft Took the time to write something about National Coming Out Day is on Facebook Their walls in 2009, and yet a year later, we still have People Who Think It's Wrong To Be Gay. This year, the HRC Hopes Thurs eradicate the bullying by showing everyone That they're not alone. They're pushing the gay rights to the Forefront of Culture, Rather Than Keeping it on the Fringe.
