Westminster crowns Scottish deerhound

NEW YORK - A Scottish deerhound from Warrenton, VA., Won Top Honors on Tuesday night at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in Madison Square Garden.

Judge Paolo Dondina Awarded Best in Show to the female, Foxcliffe Hickory Wind, winner of Monday night's hound group competition, ahead of a Pekingese, a Chinese Shar-Pei, a Bearded Collie (herding), a black Cocker Spaniel (Sporting), a Portuguese water dog (working) and smooth fox terrier (terrier).

The deerhound finished third to last year. Her handler, Angela Lloyd, says the second year made all the difference: "This Dog Is not Used To cities or venues this size," she says. "It Is Used To Chasing Squirrels and deer all day is a big farm. "

Westminster is about more than just the winners, and there are Many Other compelling stories here. Brig. Gen. Rhonda Cornum is a case in point. Cornum ADDS dog handler to her impressive list of titles.

The Army physician has Won Many Medals, Including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, DURING her 31-year military career. Now, in Addition Thurs working full time at the Pentagon, she pushes herself to Train and her dogs compete in shows and Field Trials.

How does she find the time? "Someone once said You Can Sleep When You're Dead," she says. "I am very lucky in Not needing much sleep. When I was learning to Become a surgeon, I found out That."
