Pak to increase electricity rates by two per cent

Gilani Eyes Another Term for PPP Govt

LAHORE: The Pakistan People’s Party government would complete its five-year constitutional term and come into power for another five years through the power of ballot, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Saturday during a meeting of the PPP Punjab’s parliamentary party at the Governor’s House.
Gilani said former premier Benazir Bhutto signed the Charter of Democracy and it was the responsibility of every PPP worker to implement the charter and spread her vision across the country. He said if ballot and implementation of manifestos were yardsticks to measure the success of a political party, then the PPP had implemented 80 percent of the CoD as well as 70 percent of the party’s manifesto. Addressing the PPP workers, the PM urged them to prepare for local government elections, saying 2011 should be the year of LG elections, saying they would be an opportunity to reach out to the masses. 

Paying tribute to Benazir, he said the former premier had made the transition to democracy possible, as she forced Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf to announce general elections in the country in 2008 and doff his uniform. Gilani said, Benazir, through her political insight and wisdom, had made it possible for the political leadership to return to the country and take part in elections.

Media: Regarding government-media relations, the PM said, “We have nothing against the media as media has equally sacrificed for democracy in the country,” but clarified, “Any specific comments regarding a certain media group do not mean that the entire media was the subject.”

Regarding the judiciary, he said that the PPP had always held the judiciary in veneration and the elements that wished of a clash between the two institutions would be disappointed. The premier said the PPP government would take all political parties and stakeholders onboard for continuation of the democratic system in the country, adding that the PPP would also take other institutions along since it was a symbol of the federation. Gilani urged the PPP parliamentarians to work for strengthening democracy and parliament as per the vision of Benazir Bhutto, adding, “My strength was parliament.”

HRCP Slams MQM Chief Altaf Hussain For Demanding Martial Law in Pak

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has criticised the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain's call for martial law in the country, describing the leader's remarks as "Inappropriate and mischievous." 

A statement issued by the HRCP Hussain slammed for urging the Military Thurs enforce martial law against "corrupt politicians" to weed out the menace of corruption from the country.
