Change of Plans Saves Local Couple

One Decision May have saved the lives of a St. Catharines couple vacationing in Mexico.

James Gaade and girlfriend Jennifer Thornton were at the at the Grand Riviera Princess Hotel in Playa del Carmen, south of Cancun.

That Is Where Seven People, Including Five Canadians were killed Sunday in a gas explosion.

But here is the kicker.

Gaade and Thornton were going to eat breakfast at the restaurant Where The blast Happened, But Their minds changed at the last second.

Gaade Tells 610 CKTB News They Were somethings 300m away "when They heard a loud bang.

Other guests Gaade says Told him Shaking Their rooms were. One woman said it felt like the balcony HAD fallen off her suite.

Gaade and his girlfriend grabbed a First Aid Kit from Their room and Went to see if They Could help.

They all says the restaurant's 12-ft plate glass windows HAD Been Blown out, had occurred on the roof collapsed and a four foot deep crater, Reaching back 30 ft into the building.

Within 20 minutes, Gaade HAD contacted family in Canada Thurs Assure Them they was safe.

Gaade Tells us, it was Those family members a WHO Told On The Media and Foreign Affairs about the explosion.

The St. Catharines resident says hotel guests were in shock and saddened by the incident.

Some guests wanted Thurs leave, But Gaade says most we Determined to stay.

Gaade and Thornton were Already Scheduled Thurs leave on Sunday.

But they says there was "some Confusion and communication problems with Their tour provider Over Whether They Would Still Be Able to get home.

But Gaade says the experience has soured him is Not Mexico or the Grand Riviera Princess Hotel.

They Calls the staff and says Exceptional They Provided safe and fun vacation.

Also applauding Gaade is how They handled the explosion.

They says they put on a brave face and did everything To Make Sure guests were comfortable.
