First Day of Winter Mild For Portland Metro Area

PORTLAND - The first day of winter did not feel so much like winter in Portland Monday. The Shortest Day of the year started out warm, in the 50s, but True To Portland tradition, at least it was wet.
"Another weather system is moving in and to start with, things have been mild, but that will change throughout the day," said KGW meteorologist Nick Allard. "High temperatures, in fact, more than Likely will occur later this morning, before cooling off a little later in the day."
Allard said things will cool down and feel more like winter when the latest weather system on its way to the state begins Thurs draw much cooler air in from the North West, helping Thurs drop the snow levels Monday night.
"I think on average, the snow level will be down to about 1.000 feet by Monday night, if not a little lower, for the eastern half of the Gorge," he added.
A Winter Weather Advisory was already in effect for the mountains, foothills and Coast Range. "So keep in mind you'll hit some snow if you are traveling," Allard warned.
Travelers over the high passes to the North Coast may also encounter snow and eight to 14 inches of snow were possible snow Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning.
As for the lower elevations, Allard said he did not expect to see much snow below 1.000 feet 1.500 Thurs. "That's because, in the upper levels, we have air pushing in the ocean. That makes it very difficult for anything to fall below that 1.000-foot mark, "he explained.
Then, conditions will once again dry up from Wednesday through Christmas Day, with possible showers returning over the holiday weekend, Allard added.
