Commitment FroProvo • Given the news swirling around the BYU football program on ITS and probable departure from the Mountain West Conference for Independence in 2011, in Wednesday morning's 70-play scrimmage was an Almost on Thought for most Observers.
But Not for junior Riley Nelson, one of the Candidates for the starting quarterback position, along with freshman Jake Heaps. Nelson knows it is crunch time to win the starting position, And that every throw, every décision, is Being closely scrutinized.
"I missed a lot of easy throws," Nelson Said, despite posting better numbers please Heaps. "I am kind of disappointed in That, Because it is something that much Been happening the last-three or four Practice."
Not Nelson did lead the Offense into the end zone, but their proposal did complete 10 of 14 passes for 90 yards.
Heaps did get the team into the end zone with a 14-yard touchdown pass Thurs freshman tight end Richard Wilson, but their proposal that was at his one of few bright spots. They finished the day Completing six of 10 passes for 45 yards and the one TD.
Nelson's take on the quarterback race?
"I have so much to a focus myself, I Can not waste time is what Jake does," he said. "But [from watching film] who is doing an excellent job. He has had some balls have dropped him. I think they are doing is great. As far as the quarterback derby goes, that's up to the Coaches Thurs decide. "
Coach Bronco Mendenhall Said they was "impressed days to do" with the scrimmage.
"There wasn't much throwing down field ... it was a chance to keep Evaluating the players, and me will see if anyone emerged," Mendenhall said.
Cougars get the commitment a
Received a BYU has the commitment from one of the top linemen in the state, American Fork Offensive lineman Ryker Mathews. The 6-foot-6, 270-pound Mathews CONFIRMED the BYU Thurs the commitment in a text message Wednesday morning.
Mathews will be a senior this fall at American Fork in northern Utah County. Also, they had offers from Kansas and Utah.
