A Band of damaging thunderstorms packing heavy rain and wind tore through parts of central and southern New Jersey today, toppling trees and power lines and leaving TENS of Thousands of people without power.
About 40.000 homes and businesses statewide were without power at Various times tonight. Utility Officials were most Expecting Power to be restored overnight.
While there were reports of hail as far north as Sussex County, most of Storm Damage appeared To Be Concentrated near the Raritan River and south, with Perth Amboy seeming To Be The Hardest hit.
The National Weather Service, Which HAD ISSUED tornado warnings for parts of Monmouth and Ocean counties, would say Not Whether Twisters HAD Touched down DURING the fast-moving storms, Which Struck at the height of the evening rush hour.
But the weather service and Officials in Middlesex County Received Numerous reports of funnel clouds, with wind gusts of 75 mph Reported in Perth Amboy. Storm Surveys will be conducted tomorrow morning by the weather service Thurs Determine if Any tornadoes had occurred Actually Touched down.
The weather service was Expecting parts of the state Thurs Receive more heavy downpours overnight.
No injuries were Immediately Reported from the storms in New Jersey. But one person was killed in Queens When a Tree Fell on a car, Fire Officials said.
Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz declared a state of emergency tonight and ordered City Employees to Launch a "massive cleanup."
