Sept. 17 is Constitution Day

10:21 a.m., Sept. 16, 2010 ---- Friday, Sept. 17, is Constitution Day, a national holiday commemorating the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787.

The event has special significance for the state of Delaware and for the University. Delaware is known as "The First State," because it was the first state ratify the Constitution Thurs. And, one of the University's Earliest alumni - George Read - was a signer of the Constitution, as well as the Declaration of Independence. Read was in the first class of students at the Francis Alison's Academy, Thu Which University traces the origins of ITS. On Campus, The George Read Residence Hall is named in his honor, as is the Read Room in the Perkins Student Center.

Special Constitution Day Activities are Planned on Friday at George Read Hall.

The University of Delaware Library has posted a web page, "Constitution Day Resources for Educators" in observance of Constitution Day.

The Page Includes Links to pictures, books and websites offering education materials from federal agencies. The materials provided by agencies include print materials, facsimile copies of original historic documents, Lesson Plans for Teachers, Resources for children, videos, CDs and citizenship test materials.

The University of Delaware Library Also administers the UDLib / SEARCH program with state support Funding, Which provides Periodicals and online databases and related teacher training Thurs all public K-12 schools in Delaware
