Jessica McClure was the WHO child became trapped in a Texas well in 1987. The 'Baby Jessica' Rescue has re-ENTERED America's consciousness this week as we marvel at the Rescue Efforts in Chile. See her all grown up here.
Clearly I remember it. I was six, my younger brother was four, and my older brother eight. Growing up in Florida, the only concept of a well we had Came from movies and cartoons. In our minds, They Were all encircled by a gray brick structure with a wooden bucket That Could Be Lowered and raised into Them.
"How Could a kid fall into one?" Was my first thought.
Soon the epic, round the clock coverage of the event made it clear, this was a very narrow well, and getting out of Baby Jessica McClure was Not Going To Be As Simple As Lowering a bucket.
It was on October 14th, 1987. Jessica and a few Other kids were playing at her Aunt's Home Day Care Center. As her Aunt Turned away for a few minutes, the unthinkable Happened. On the other children Began Thurs scream, and it was clear Immediately That Jessica HAD fallen into an old well shaft.
Minutes later a bevel of Rescue Workers Arrive Began Thurs. First responder Bobbie Jo Hall Told People Magazine about the experience:
Would not it be 56 hour Until That the child was finally Brought to the surface. The video clip is one of the most dramatic in modern television history. A bruised, Bandage Wrapped baby girl was Eventually Brought out and greeted by live television cameras and the millions That Watched in awe.
Today just so happens To Be The 23rd anniversary of the event. Since then, Jessica has HAD Thurs endure More Than A Dozen surgeries, But is now the proud mother of a young boy. Even better, she will Receive a trust fund worth over $ 1 million generated by donations That poured in after the rescue. It's good to see her doing well.
