Storm Continues to Wallop East Coast, Heads North


A major storm that continues Thurs blanket the eastern United States has caused at least five deaths, and has snarled travel plans for millions of people right before the holidays - and is set to hit Atlantic Canada Sunday.

The day before the Winter Solstice, the storm, Which dropped almost 60 centimeters of snow in some regions, is moving through the New England states. It is expected Thurs bring winds of up to 100 kilometers per hour, and create white-out conditions Sunday.

The storm cut off Power To Thousands In North and South Carolina on Friday, and caused snow emergencies in Washington, Philadelphia and New York on Saturday.

Three deaths were reported by emergency officials in Virginia, two due to accidents on the icy roads and one due to exposure to the elements. Snowy road conditions in Ohio led Thurs car crashes, where two people died.

In West Virginia, hundreds of drivers were stranded for 27 hours on the highways due to the weather. The Red Cross and the National Guard had to step in to help get them out and provide blankets.

Washington, D.C. recorded 40 centimeters of snow at Reagan National Airport - the most ever recorded there in December for a single day. Most airline flights and Greyhound bus service in the region have been canceled.

NBC News Reporter Chris Gordon told CTV News Channel that the Washington Redskins football team is trying to clear more than 11 million Kilograms of snow off the field so they can play a game on Monday night.
